The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has finally implemented the new rules aimed at combating fake SMS, spam calls and increasing incidents of cyber fraud in India. From December 1, 2024, TRAI’s new traceability rule has come into effect across the country, with major telecom operators such as Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL instructed to implement the same.

What is the new OTP traceability rule?

Under the new rule, One-Time Password (OTP) messages will be sent to mobile users, which can now be traced back to their source. This will enable telcos to identify the origin of fraudulent OTPs, providing better protection against cyber fraud.

Additionally, TRAI believes that this step will play a crucial role in curbing fake messages and improving digital security for users.

Fake messages to watch out for starting today

The traceability rule will make it easier for mobile phone users to identify spam numbers or fraudulent messages. It categorizes banking and promotional telemarketing messages, ensuring clarity for users. Telecom operators can also issue alerts for suspicious promotional messages to pre-warn users about potential scams.

Impact on users

TRAI has assured the users that the implementation of the traceability rule will not cause any delay in receiving the OTP. Messages will continue to reach users on time as before, ensuring a seamless experience for essential transactions.

Deadline and implementation

Initially, TRAI set October 31, 2024 as the deadline for telcos to implement this rule. However, at the request of telecom providers, it has been extended till November 30, 2024.

The rule is now officially implemented nationwide as of today (December 1, 2024).

Why is this rule important to users?

With cases of cyber fraud and spam on the rise, the traceability rule is expected to bring significant relief to the millions of smartphone users who rely on their phones.

It further aims to improve messaging and further strengthen trust in digital communication, making it safer for consumers in India.

Stay alert and enjoy safer communication with the new TRAI rule in place.
